![]() ![]() ![]() There are some things you should know that are not on the internet. The Ritchey Cross fork is very light, and quite durable (not the stiffest though). A very impressive weight for a bike that fits in a suitcase! My frame is under 1400g without cable couplers, but includes the steel clamp. hp?t=32491 Ignore my posts about 135mm spacing, I was on crack! It's 130mm. the Ritchey Ti Cross Breakaway is an amazing bike. If I could take one thing with me when I die it would be this bike. Or the road around Haleakala in Maui - that one's pretty rugged. Now all you need is a ticket to southern Tuscany to go rally on some strada bianca.good times. Steel cross frame - good adventure bike, pretty damn heavy. Ti road frame - really, it's just not that much better than the steel and cost 2.5X - woulda been better with a Ti rear triangle anyway.Ĥ. Steel Road frameset - good value, rides really well.ģ. Ti Cross frameset - worth the price of admission for ride quality and versatility. In general for "good road bike" application:ġ. I'd race the Ti cross frame on the road with some fast wheels - it's that good. I had the steel cross too (yes, it's kind of a pig, but it rides really well) and even it was an astoundingly good bicycle overall. They actually handle quite nicely and descend on rails. It will take full fenders to become your spring bike (with the EC90X), room for any tires and rides like a very good road bike (Ritchey's cross geometry is rather road-ish). Could possibley be the perfect "only" bike. You can easily build it to 16-17 lbs., don't need to use a brake cable coupler (canti's) and don't have to remove the front brake. They ride well and, having ridden both, I believe the steel road frame is the "ride quality" equal of something like the CoMotion CoPilot (S&S frame).įor an ideal travel/multi bike, get the Ti cross frame, replace the fork with an EC90X. We feel the Break-Away concept is the best value in travel bikes, and the Break-Away Ti Cross is the most versatile of the series. Ritchey can't promise what the airlines will charge, but the cost difference of a checked suitcase versus a bike travel fee has the potential to save hundreds of dollars. For comparison, a full size bike box or travel case is much larger and more cumbersome at 50"x30"x10". The well proven Break-Away concept lets you bring a great riding bike in a travel case that is only 8.5"x26.5"x31" - the size of a large suitcase. Other travel bikes leave a lot to be desired and are more suited to short errands. With a little practice, Ritchey's Break-Away travel bikes pack down cleanly into the supplied case. To complete this frameset, Ritchey includes the WCS drop-in Headset, and all the Break-Away essentials: couplers, cable splitters, padding, and of course, the travel case. The geometry was designed to be stable on and off pavement, but with closer to a true cross bottom bracket clearance. Geometry wise, the Break-Away Ti Cross is closer to the traditional Swiss Cross design with a very slight top-tube slope. Cantilever brakes allow excellent clearance, and we have installed 700x35 knobby tires in both the frame and fork with some room to spare (actual tire size varies with manufacturer). The bridgeless chainstays offer increased rear tire clearance, and rear rack eyelets demonstrate that Ritchey knew the market when the frame was developed. The 44mm rake, straight blade full carbon fork is WCS level, so it is light, stiff, and soaks up vibration. The custom drawn, lightweight, mitered 3/2.5 tubing provides a smooth forgiving ride, but responds immediately when you power up. Having a cyclocross style frame makes the perfect travel bike more versatile, and titanium is the optimum material for this option.Īs in the Ti-Road Break-Away, the titanium finish and bead-blasted logos hold up exceptionally well to the rigors of packing and travel. And while there are some folks who will race this WCS level product, the vast majority of cyclists who buy this frame want a more capable road frame that can accommodate larger, or knobby tires that better suit the riding conditions found around the world. One model Break-Away fans clamored for was a titanium cyclocross frame. The elegantly simple system can easily be managed with a minimum of mechanical know-how. Ritchey's Break-Away system has proven itself, with thousands of Break-Away frames in the hands of well-traveled cyclists.
